Founded in 1537 by Sebastián de Belalcázar, Popayán was an important religious and political center during the colonial period. Its nickname, "The White City," comes from its colonial houses painted white and its abundance of churches and convents.

Note: Its Holy Week celebration is declared a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
