Construction began in 1916 and was completed in 1949, although devotion started in the 18th century. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared on a rock to María Mueses and her daughter Rosa, attracting pilgrims and giving rise to the current sanctuary.
Today, it is an important pilgrimage center and recognized for its Gothic architecture over the canyon.

Explore the church: Admire the architecture, arches, and stained glass. Take your time inside.

Las Lajas Museum: Learn about the history of the apparitions and the miracles associated with the sanctuary.

Hiking and viewpoints: There are short trails around the canyon with panoramic views perfect for photos.

Photos and details: Bring a camera; every corner offers unique photographic opportunities.

Night visit: Seeing the sanctuary illuminated is an experience many travelers recommend, and I do too.

Respect: It is an active place of worship; maintain appropriate behavior.
Clothing: It gets cold in the mornings and evenings; bring warm clothing.
Hours: Visit early to avoid crowds.
Shoes: Wear comfortable shoes for steep streets.
Money: Bring cash; not all businesses accept cards.
Combined excursion: I did this to make the most of the day. I woke up at 6 am to go to the Sanctuary, then went to the Tulcán Cemetery in Ecuador and then returned to Ipiales to see the sanctuary in the afternoon/evening. Click here to see the guide to get to Tulcán Cemetery

What is the best time to visit? The dry season (June-September and December-February) avoids rain and improves views.
Is entry free? Yes, access to the sanctuary is free. Guided tours may have a cost.
How much time do I need? A basic tour takes 2-3 hours; you can stay longer if you want photos or hikes.

Are you ready for your visit? I hope this travel guide has helped you plan your trip to Las Lajas Sanctuary. See you on the next adventure! :D
