The Tulcán Cemetery is located in the city of Tulcán, the capital of the Carchi province, in northern Ecuador. It is very close to the border with Colombia, making it a frequent stop for those coming from Ipiales.
From Ipiales or Pasto: Take a taxi or bus to the Rumichaca International Bridge. Cross the border and take local transport to Tulcán. The journey from the bridge usually takes less than 30 minutes.
When crossing, exchange money for dollars. For example, exchanging about $80,000 COP may be enough for a round trip and a lunch; adjust according to your plan.
From Quito: Buses leave from the Terminal Terrestre (Carcelén) to Tulcán.
Entry usually costs $2 USD for foreigners and $1 USD for nationals. To return to Ipiales, you can head to Parque Ayora, about 3 blocks from the cemetery, where taxis to the border depart. You can wait until the car is full or pay for the entire ride.
Tip: Bring your passport or ID if crossing the border.

Inaugurated in 1932, what distinguishes the cemetery is the sculptural work in cypress trees done by José María Azael Franco, a local gardener-artist. His living works—arches, figures, and cultural motifs—were declared Cultural Heritage in 1984. Today, his heirs maintain and renew these figures.

The sculptures reflect tradition and creativity: religious, mythological, and geometric themes that attract art and photography lovers.

Marvel at the cypress sculptures: Over 300 figures including arches, animals, faces, and religious symbols. Ideal for photography and observation.
Guided tour: Hire a local guide to learn about the history and symbolism behind the sculptures. Many offer tours at affordable prices.
Enjoy the tranquility: Although it is an active cemetery, the atmosphere is serene and suitable for walking, reading, or meditating.
