Inaugurated in 1939, the Gold Museum preserves and promotes Colombian archaeological heritage. Its collection documents centuries of techniques, rituals, and indigenous art.

The museum houses over 34,000 pieces of gold and other collections with lithic, ceramic, and textile objects that showcase the cultural diversity of peoples such as Muisca, Tairona, Quimbaya, and Zenú.

The Muiscas are known for their goldsmithing and rituals associated with gold. Their pieces provide a deep insight into their social organization and beliefs.

The Muisca Raft represents the ritual that originated the legend of El Dorado: a chief covered in gold sailing on a lagoon as an offering to the gods.

The legend is related to the Laguna de Guatavita and inspired historical expeditions in search of treasures.
