Founded in 1811 and named after a local indigenous leader, Guatapé is distinguished by its zócalos, colorful reliefs that tell stories of families and traditions. The construction of the dam in the 1970s flooded much of the old El Peñol and forced the relocation of residents, forever changing the region.
