Playa Blanca is located on the island/peninsula of Barú, approximately 45 minutes from Cartagena de Indias by car or boat. Although it is now connected to the mainland, it retains the Caribbean atmosphere: turquoise sea, palm trees, and fine sand. The weather is warm and tropical year-round, with average temperatures between 28°C and 32°C.
Choose according to your budget and travel style:
Cartagena to Pasacaballos: Take the bus to Pasacaballos from the Historic Center. Ask which is the closest stop; I have taken it from 2 locations: at Muebles Jamar, one block from the Castillo de San Felipe, and by the monument of India Catalina. The fare is $4,100 COP and the journey takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. Tell the driver to drop you off at the D1 where the motorcycles and cars to Playa Blanca are.
Pasacaballos to Playa Blanca: Once in Pasacaballos, you can buy what you need at D1 for your trip. There, take a private car, motorcycle taxi, or Tuk Tuk. The fare costs $10,000 COP and you'll arrive in about 30 minutes.
Day tour: Many agencies in the Historic Center offer day trips that include transportation to and from. Estimated price: $80,000 COP. Ideal if you don't want to worry about logistics.
By sea (speedboat): Departures from the Muelle de la Bodeguita, near the Clock Tower. Price: $70,000–$80,000 COP + $20,000 COP port tax.
Tip for foreigners: Bring cash and small bills: there are no ATMs in Playa Blanca and most payments are in cash.
