The Battle of Pantano de Vargas was part of the Liberating Campaign of 1819. The charge of the fourteen lancers, led by Juan José Rondón, was decisive in tipping the balance in favor of the independence forces and paved the way for victory at the Battle of Boyacá.
Pantano de Vargas is located in the municipality of Paipa, Boyacá, 40 km from Tunja and at an altitude of 2,600 meters above sea level. Its mountainous surroundings offer good views and a cool atmosphere.
From Bogotá: At the nearest terminal, take a bus to Paipa. The approximate travel time is about 3 hours and costs $50,000 COP.

Monument to the Fourteen Lancers: This is a monumental sculpture (33 m) by Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt that commemorates the heroic charge of the lancers. A photographic point and symbol of independence.
Pantano de Vargas Museum: A small museum next to the monument featuring uniforms, weapons, and documents from the Battle of Pantano de Vargas and the Liberating Campaign. Entrance: 8,000 COP.
